Trip to Gillette Castle
and the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat
Join us for a fun filled day down to Connecticut where we will travel by boats, train, and of course our beloved little Miatas. Along the way we will have a picnic lunch on the grounds of a castle, and meet up with the Nutmeg Miata Club for dinner at a fish tail.
We will be meeting at the Westboro Service Plaza on the Mass Pike Westbound, the first rest area after Rt 495. We will have about a two and half hour long scenic drive to our first stop, Gillette Castle in East Haddam, CT. There will be no planned stops along the way in order to give us enough time to enjoy the castle, so make sure you are T.F.B.E. (Tanks Full, Bladder Empty) when we start the trip.
Gillette Castle was built in 1919 and was the home of William Gillette a famous actor of the time. Those that wish can tour the castle or just sit back and enjoy the beautiful views of the Connecticut River.
After we leave the castle there will be a short drive down to our first boat trip, the Chester Ferry which will take us across the Connecticut River. There is a $3.00 charge per car for the ferry, and the boat only holds approximately 16 cars so we may have to split up into a few groups
After crossing the river we'll travel down to Essex where we will board a steam train for an hour long trip down to Deep River Landing. We will then disembark the train and board the riverboat for a relaxing cruise along the river.
We will then drive down to Madison, along the Connecticut shoreline, to meet up with the Nutmeg Miata Club for dinner at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tail restaurant. The Fish Tail is an "in the rough" type of seafood restaurant with good food and reasonable prices. The restaurant is located just minutes from Rte 95 to take us all back home.
Prices for the days activities are:
